Week 1 of Summer Camp = Success! 🎉

From building bridges to building friendships, students at both our Transition Camp and Elementary Engineering Camp had an incredible week of learning and growing together.

In Engineering Camp, our youngest students got hands-on with STEM as they learned about different types of bridges and constructed their creative designs. 🛠️

Meanwhile, our Transition Camp students focused on teamwork, communication, and social interaction, participating in team-building challenges, exploring downtown Romney, and even introducing new campers to the exciting game of goalball! 🥅

A huge THANK YOU to Ms. Rachel Lanham for leading our Transition Camp, Mrs. Shoemaker for guiding Engineering Camp, and to all the staff who made this week possible, including our amazing WVSDB Outreach team, Residential Life team, and dedicated aides. 💛

Here’s to more summer fun ahead! 🌞

Engineering Fun at WVSDB! 🛠️

Our elementary students explored the world of bridges during Summer Engineering Camp! From learning about different bridge designs to building their own with creative materials, these young engineers put their skills to the test.

This hands-on experience was especially meaningful for our Deaf/Hard of Hearing (DHH) and Visually Impaired (VI) students, offering a fully accessible way to explore STEM in action. 🤩

Our Transition Camp students have had a week full of learning and adventure! 🌟

Understanding the transition from school to adulthood is especially important for our Deaf/Hard of Hearing (DHH) and Visually Impaired (VI)students as they build the skills and confidence needed for independence and future success.

This week, they explored the voting process, then ROCKED the vote with a rock-climbing experience! 🧗‍♀️

At WVU’s Outdoor Education Center, they took on the low ropes course, learning how to communicate, work as a team, and recognize when to support one another. 💬🤝

They ended the day with a delicious meal from the Beehive Café because learning is always better with good food! 🍴💛

American Sign Language (ASL) Idioms! 🤟

An idiom is a phrase whose meaning isn’t obvious from the words themselves, like “break the ice,” which means to start a conversation. 🧊

Our American Sign Language (ASL) class students at the West Virginia Schools for the Deaf and the Blind (WVSDB) have created their own original ASL idioms.
