The Ready, Set, Drive program is designed to support Deaf and Hard of Hearing (DHH) individuals who use American Sign Language (ASL) and are experiencing difficulty passing the written driver’s license examination. It provides accessible, ASL-based instruction focused on developing a strong conceptual understanding of traffic laws, road signs, and the language commonly used on the written exam. Instruction will be delivered through structured, small-group Zoom sessions conducted entirely in ASL.
Many ASL users encounter barriers when preparing for the written exam, including limited access to direct ASL instruction and the complexity of English-based test materials. This program addresses these challenges by emphasizing comprehension, effective test-taking strategies, and real-world application of driving concepts in a supportive and inclusive learning environment.
Participants will benefit from:
Direct instruction in ASL
Visual supports and guided review of key concepts
Practice questions with ASL-based explanation and discussion
Strategies for interpreting and responding to complex test questions
A structured environment designed to reduce test-related anxiety
