Students attending this summer’s Transition Camp at the West Virginia Schools for the Deaf and the Blind (WVSDB) spent the week developing essential life skills through real-world experiences and engaging activities designed to prepare them for life beyond high school. The camp provided opportunities for students to build independence, practice communication, and develop the confidence needed for successful transitions into adulthood. Through a variety of engaging, real-world activities, students gained valuable insights into civic engagement, digital safety, and collaborative problem-solving.
One of the week’s highlights was a visit to West Virginia University’s (WVU) Outdoor Education Center, where students participated in a low ropes course designed to strengthen teamwork and communication. These challenges emphasized skills essential for success in both the workplace and daily life. Earlier in the day, students took part in an interactive lesson on the voting process, which they celebrated with a symbolic “Rock the Vote” rock-climbing activity.
In addition, students explored important topics such as internet safety and responsible digital behavior. Discussions centered on protecting personal information online, recognizing online risks, and making smart choices in digital spaces.
The WVSDB extends heartfelt appreciation to Ms. Rachel Lanham for leading Transition Camp and to all those who made the week possible, including the WVSDB Outreach team, Residential Life team, and dedicated aides.
