"Building Confident Independent Young People in a Safe Environment".
At the West Virginia Schools for the Deaf and the Blind (WVSDB), we believe that learning, growth, and friendships extend beyond the classroom. Our Residential Program offers students who are Deaf, Hard of Hearing, Blind, and Visually Impaired a safe, supportive, and vibrant home away from home.
Here, students live, learn, and thrive together in an environment designed for accessibility, independence, and community connection. Our dedicated residential staff provide 24/7 support, ensuring that every student feels secure, respected, and empowered to develop important life skills.
Through daily routines, recreational activities, weekend adventures, and leadership opportunities, residential life at WVSDB helps students build lasting friendships, explore new interests, and grow in confidence, all while celebrating their unique identities.
We invite you to learn more about how our Residential Program is more than just a place to stay — it’s a place to belong.
We provide a nurturing environment where students who are Deaf, Hard of Hearing, Blind, or Visually Impaired can thrive socially, emotionally, and academically, surrounded by peers and staff who celebrate and support each individual’s unique journey.
Our residential program empowers students to build essential life skills such as personal care, time management, communication, and responsibility, preparing them for confident, independent living beyond school.
Through structured activities, clubs, and leadership roles within the dorms, students have opportunities to form lasting friendships, explore personal interests, and develop teamwork, advocacy, and leadership skills.
Residential Care Specialists (RCS) are dedicated staff members who play a vital role in supporting students in the residential program. They provide supervision, guidance, and mentorship to ensure a safe, structured, and nurturing living environment.
RCS staff assist students with developing daily living skills, encouraging positive social interactions, promoting independence, and helping students navigate residential routines such as mealtimes, homework, recreation, and personal care.
They also facilitate activities, monitor student well-being, and communicate closely with families, teachers, and support services to meet each student’s individual needs.
Medications are managed by trained Residential staff and the Health Center nurse.
Students have access to nursing support, counseling services, and regular wellness checks.
Please complete all required health forms before your child’s arrival.
“Living on campus at WVSDB has been one of the best parts of my school experience. I’ve made so many friends, learned how to be more independent, and always feel supported by the staff. It really feels like my second home.”
