Health & Related Services

At the West Virginia Schools for the Deaf and the Blind, Health Services' primary goal is the health and safety of the students. Our nursing professionals not only provide care to students when they are ill but also help educate and counsel them on how to prevent illness and maintain good health. The nursing staff believes that good health is a vital part of each student's success in academic achievement and social-emotional development.

Health Service's main office is located on the ground floor of Keller Hall, with multiple sick bay areas to keep students for minor illnesses. There is also an office for the School Nurse in the school.

The nursing staff strives to provide evidence-based practice and the highest quality of care. All routine medical care requires orders from the student's home medical provider. Nursing is able to care for minor injuries and illness with supervision from a contracted medical provider. Each student's injury/illness is considered and assessed. The nurse's primary goal is to keep students at school, but there are times when it will be required that the student be sent home. In this case, it is the parent's responsibility to pick their student up.

Nursing staff will consult with the student's medical provider to ensure every student has what they need to be healthy and thriving. Health Services schedules clinics throughout the school year to help parents maintain their student's health, such as Smiles Mobile Dentist, Immunization Clinics with Hampshire County Health Department, Office of Children with Special Needs Nutrition Clinic, etc.
