Empowering Futures for Visually Impaired and Deaf/Hard-of-Hearing Students
Discovery P.O.I.N.T. is a series of dynamic 6 mini courses designed for students in West Virginia who are Low Vision, Blind, Deaf, Hard-of-Hearing, or Deafblind. It is located on the beautiful campus of The West Virginia Schools for the Deaf and Blind (WVSDB) in Romney, WV. This program provides students an opportunity to participate in one of five Career and Technical Education (CTE) Academies. Our program is tailored to equip students with the skills and experiences they need to thrive after graduation. Discovery P.O.I.N.T. will be offered six times throughout the school year, providing multiple opportunities for students to focus on career readiness skills and expanded core curriculum opportunities.

POTENTIAL
What is your PURPOSE? What is your POTENTIAL? What are your PLANS? Explore your career options by participating in a Career and Technical Education (CTE) Academy.
OPPORTUNITY
Students will be given an opportunity to join one of the 5 CTE Academies at WVSDB. This will allow 'hands-on' experience. The Academy Student will participate in daily activities in CTE, Expanded Core Curriculum (ECC), and residential activities. The academy students will reside in the dorms throughout the week.
INDEPENDENCE
Students will be given a chance to strengthen their independent living skills through exploration of the Expanded Core Curriculum (ECC) Standards, intensive Braille, American Sign Language (ASL) and Orientation and Mobility (O&M) learning times. Students, staff, and county teachers will collaborate to personalize experiences for Deaf and Hard of Hearing (DHH) and Visually Impaired (VI).
NETWORK
Students will be given the opportunity to build working relationships with professionals who are able to assist them in their day-to-day lives. A final resource document will be created by the student for their portfolio, while connecting them to resources and services to support them after graduation.
TOOLBOX
Students will be given the opportunity to create or improve their personal resume, bring home micro-credentials from Business Enterprise, certifications in OSHA and/or Food Handlers, and a list of worked on, improved and/or mastered Expanded Core Curriculum Standards.

ACADEMIES
Building & Maintenance Operations
The Building Maintenance and Operations Academy is a comprehensive, hands-on program encompassing multiple disciplines and trades which are involved in residential and commercial construction. Students will learn aspects from all the following: Hand tools, power tools, masonry, welding, carpentry, painting, plumbing, HVAC, and electrical.
Business Enterprise
The Business Enterprise Academy is designed to give students a chance to run a hands-on business inside and outside of the classroom while working together as a team with other students.
Culinary/Hospitality
The Culinary and Hospitality Academy is designed to provide hands-on experience and industry-relevant knowledge, our program equips students with the essential tools to excel in culinary arts and restaurant management.
Music
The Music Academy provides an enriching environment where students can explore, develop, and showcase their musical talents through comprehensive, hands-on experiences.
Personal Career Readiness
The Personal Career Readiness Academy is designed to equip students with the essential skills and knowledge needed to thrive in their future careers. Students will leave with a clear understanding of their career options, a set of practical job skills, and the confidence to pursue their professional goals. Whether continuing education, entering the workforce, or exploring entrepreneurial ventures, students are well-prepared to navigate the journey ahead.
