Dear WVSDB Family,

We hope this finds each of you to be safe and well. As we transition into the beginning of school year 2020-2021, we hope that each of you are safe and well. We wanted to share WVSDB's re-entry plans regarding school this fall. All schools in West Virginia have received specific guidance from Governor Justice, the West Virginia Department of Education, as well as State Health Officials. The West Virginia Board Education and county superintendents joined the West Virginia Department of Education and more than 40 national and state agencies and organizations to serve as partners in developing the re-entry and recovery plans for West Virginia schools. These partners continue to provide insight, research support, and expertise as the pandemic evolves in the state. The West Virginia Department of Education has worked closely with the COVID-19 Outbreak to Recovery Advisory Council to vet, review, and inform guidance for school re-entry this fall and the recovery of the education system through the year 2021 and beyond. The product of this work has been distilled into nine focus areas to serve as a framework for counties to consider when making local-level decisions. This information may be found at West Virginia Department of Education website by accessing the following link, https://wvde.us/category/re-entry-site/. The fluid nature of the virus and its impact on our schools and communities require the council of partners to remain engaged moving forward to support counties with guidance. At a local level, WVSDB administration has been working with our school leadership team to consider potential safety, instructional, and logistical plans based on current information from the West Virginia Department of Education, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and other official sources. We have also been reviewing the various surveys that WVSDB recently sent to parents to assist in our planning as we move forward. WVSDB is also part of various regional and state planning groups in collaboration with other school districts. Recommendations from these stakeholders highlight the challenges and generate ideas for a safe return to school this fall as part of our re-entry plan. As part of WVSDB's re-entry plan, there are specific guidelines and procedures for social distancing, sanitation protocols, and best health practices. Unfortunately, some traditional activities held at WVSDB will not be held or will be held with modifications to limit the threat of contracting the COVID-19 virus. WVSDB' s re-entry plan will involve in-person instruction designed to engage all students in learning five days a week. This school year, our district wide goals are to highlight both academic and social and emotional learning. WVSDB has taken into consideration appropriateness of schedules and use of technology as well as equity and access to broadband throughout the campus environment. Consideration has been made addressing family and staff engagement and outreach to support students. Modifications of our school calendar, student and instructional personnel schedules, health care plans, behavioral support, and mobility issues for our students are part of our core components. WVSDB has worked closely with the WVDE in making all local-level decisions. We will continue to provide ongoing communication with you as soon as we receive updated information from Governor Justice and the West Virginia Department of Education. Enclosed with this letter you will find the revised school calendar for the 2020-2021 school year. Planning has been grounded to address lost instructional time from the extended COVID-19 closure at the end of the 2019-2020 school year and the potential of future COVID-19 interruptions. As you will observe, the number of homegoings has decreased significantly. August 25th will be the first day for all 200-day contractual employees. Our students first day of instruction will be September 8th with buses returning residential students to campus on September 7th. The 2020-2021 school calendar will also be posted on the WVSDB' s website by accessing the following link, https://www.wvsdb2.state.kl2.wv.us/. WVSDB recognizes that the response to the COVID-19
pandemic is fluid, and guidance will continuously be updated to ensure it aligns with Governor Justice's and public health officials' best practices. At utmost importance for all considerations of re-entry is the safety of our students, personnel, and the extended education community. Thank you for your continued support and flexibility as we move forward in serving our students and families.
Please stay well,

Sincerely,
Patricia Homberg, WVDE Interim Leadership Liaison

Jamie L. Vittorio, WVSDB Chief Academic Officer
